Dr Sapavat Shankar joined the ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition in September 2021. He received his MBBS degree from Bhaskar Medical College, Hyderabad, which is affiliated with NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada. Currently, he is working in the Division of Public Health Nutrition, focusing on research related to Nutrition Epidemiology, Nutritional Surveillance, Tuberculosis, Sports Nutrition, and non- communicable diseases in community settings. He is a member of the Nutrition Society of India and the Epidemiology Foundation of India. Before joining NIN, he worked as a resident doctor in a government medical college in Nalgonda, Telangana, and also worked as an emergency physician in various hospitals in Hyderabad.

Dr Shankar is also coordinating the Dietary & Biomarker Survey-I (DABS-I), a large-scale study assessing the nutritional and health status of the Indian population. In addition to his research responsibilities, he is a faculty member for the MSc Nutrition program and the Postgraduate Certificate Course in Nutrition at NIN.
